Cocktails with Kate

I have fun following a people and brands on Twitter. I especially love it when someone is sending bite-sized updates about an event as it happens or a project as it is in the works. Kate Spade New York is one of my favorite brands and I loved reading about the process of setting up the boutique in Palm Springs as it was happening.
This past weekend, I had a chance to see the result of the hours of searching Palm Springs vintage and thrift stores. I checked out the Kate …

Palm Springs Modernism Week

This past weekend, I attended the kick off of Palm Springs Modernism Week.  It was the perfect event for me.  I love mid-century modern architecture and style and I love the indoor-outdoor relaxed living of the 1960s Palm Springs cocktail aesthetic.  I love clothing styles that take cues from that time period yet are completely current.
Although the weather started out with rain, it cleared up to be a beautiful weekend.  I was happy to visit my favorite café in Palm Springs: Koffi Coffee.  Fully armed with a honey-vanilla latte, I …

I Dream of Poured Concrete

I have an odd obsession with terrazzo.  I think it is such a beautiful building material.  I have a small(ish) and growing collection of terrazzo photos. I have the National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association, Inc. website bookmarked.  Don’t judge.  I’d like to eventually have some terrazzo installed at my house.  I love the thought of a white-on-white poured and polished floor.  But, the truth is, any time I see terrazzo floors I fall in with the color I see at the time.  Perfidious?  I don’t think so – I always …

Don’t Blame Me – The Design Made Me Weak

Is it wrong to want to live in a restaurant? I can see a lot of practical sides to this wish. No grocery shopping, no dish washing, no planning meals for the week. Heaven.

After eating at Trio restaurant in Palm Springs, I have design envy. Located in a former bank building, this restaurant plays established modern cool to its advantage. The restaurant has a gravitas that is provided by the building’s history as a bank. Heavy natural materials in bank-speak say, “We have been around for a long time and …

DINKs – Where good times are welcome

Having dinner at DINK’s in Palm Springs reminded me of two forgotten life experiences: the last house party I went to in France and the first time I was kicked out of the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel. DINK’s is a restaurant and cocktail lounge that is Palm Springs appropriate – generous outdoor seating, mid-century modern design overtones, private booths inside, and an extensive cocktail menu.
Why did DINK’s remind me of these two things? Both of these memories shared a certain amount of contained chaos. The party in …

Cool Desert Heat

Palm Springs is as slick as it gets when it comes to weekend get-aways in Southern California. This oasis of cool in the desert will quench your thirst for relaxation, fun, and all things hip.
Your To Do list must include a stop at The Citron restaurant at the Viceroy Hotel. Put it at the top of your list and make an extra effort to get it checked off early during your stay. The Viceroy makes good use of a black, white, and yellow color scheme. In the evening, this gives …

Commute over 100 miles for coffee?

Being a responsible citizen takes energy. Often more than I naturally generate. So, I turn to my friend coffee to close the gap between my natural self and the cat-like reflexes required to spot great accessories or hot spots. Bottom line: even the glam need coffee. And, drinking coffee and espresso should not be like taking medicine! No. It should be an oasis – a warm blanket of goodness – elevating us to our best selves. Unfortunately, that goal is often missed. And, when one is in that vulnerable state …
