Karen Millen points my mind in the right direction

karen_millen_green_dressThis designer knows the three magic words that make designs turn-the-head flattering:

Con. Struc. Tion.

The clothes by Karen Millen are beautiful both in a subjective and technical way. The designs are deceptively straightforward on a hanger – but very body-loving on, and there is a lot of detail in each item. The pieces are classic without being dated or dull – and offer a lot of elegant sex appeal. The kind of sex appeal that has everything of importance covered up but points the viewer’s mind in the right direction. That, my friends, is class. And, the construction and details of seam placement and fabric choice make each piece a make-over-in-a-shopping-bag. Putting on the clothes and looking in the mirror is like The Reveal on a makeover show. But the great thing is you can do it over and over again. And, you don’t need to put up with 45 minutes of the host harassing you to get to The Reveal.

An example of her witty design is her faux belt knit top. Like classic Roberta di Camerino, these sweaters have a tromp l’oeil belt knitted into the fabric. It provides shaping in an engaging and witty way – and also looks damn good. Karen Millen is an excellent choice for staple pieces to a wardrobe. Even the more whimsical pieces will end up becoming go-tos, but if you need to start somewhere, start with a staple piece so you can enjoy the construction and design on a regular basis.

There are only a handful of locations in the USA – but they are absolutely worth a visit. The boutique in Los Angeles had a nice selection and the staff was very friendly and helpful. If you are concerned about attitude then you may be boutique-profiling.  Have an open mind – it is 2009.  The staff at Karen Millen, Los Angeles were encouraging and excited to show the collection.  The sales staff wanted the customers to enjoy the design as much as they did and were very down-to-earth.  Refreshing.  With well placed seams.

Karen Millen just opened up a boutique at Fashion Valley in San Diego! I saw that she also has some great shoes. They’re now on my must-buy list.

Absolutely! Her shoes are great – v slick – great observation. And, honestly, how much of a mess can you be if you are eyeing Karen Millen?
